🚫 5 Foods You Should NEVER Feed Your Dog
When it comes to spoiling our canine companions, it's tempting to share our favorite snacks with them.
However, what's delicious to us can be extremely dangerous to our furry friends.
As dog lovers at Canine Science, we're here to spread awareness about the everyday foods that could pose serious health risks to your dog.
1. The Hidden Dangers of Chocolate
While chocolate is a beloved treat among humans, it contains substances called theobromine and caffeine, which can be toxic to dogs. Even in small quantities, chocolate can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and seizures in dogs.
2. Sugar-Free Sweetener: Xylitol
Many sugar-free products such as gum, candy, and even some peanut butters contain xylitol. In dogs, xylitol can trigger a rapid release of insulin, potentially resulting in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
3. Grapes & Raisins: Small but Mighty Risks
A snack of grapes or raisins can seem like a healthy option for your dog, but these small fruits can cause sudden kidney failure in canines. The exact toxin causing the reaction is unknown, but avoiding them is key to your dog's health.
4. Onions and Garlic: A Toxic Flavoring
Onions and garlic, in all forms (raw, cooked, or powder), contain compounds that can cause gastroenteritis and potentially severe damage to red blood cells in dogs. Anemia and even long-term damage to the liver or kidneys can occur as a result.
5. Avocado: Not a Dog-Friendly Fruit
Although avocados are packed with healthy fats for humans, they contain persin, a toxin that can result in vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Because the severity of the reaction to avocados can vary between dogs, it's best to err on the side of caution and avoid feeding them this fruit.
